The internet didn’t ruin diamonds. A manufacturing process did that, slowly, over a decade, mostly in trade publications nobody outside the industry reads. The internet simply disrupted the system around it by removing the gatekeepers.

It used to take a loupe and an appointment to get anyone in this industry to tell you what your stone was actually worth. The internet took a category that had long been guarded by discretion, institutional knowledge and, yes, a certain amount of intimidation, and opened it up to everyone. The democratization of information has also democratized authority.

Consumers have access to more information than they ever have, and I think that’s fantastic. We should celebrate the fact that people are suddenly fascinated by diamonds while simultaneously questioning who’s doing the teaching. The trouble is that the internet didn’t replace the gatekeepers with better ones. It made everyone capable of sounding like one.

Bethenny is a pretty good example of what that looks like in practice. She has, among other things, a series called Jewelry University. And I couldn’t help but think of Kanye’s famously blunt question about Lady Gaga becoming Polaroid’s creative director: “What the fuck does she know about cameras?”

It’s a useful question here too: what makes someone qualified to teach you about diamonds?

And I think the answer has gotten harder to identify because people don’t always decide who to trust based on who knows the most. They decide based on who sounds the most certain, and certainty shows up in a few different disguises. Sometimes it’s confidence. Sometimes it’s fluency. On a subject like this one, it’s often morality.

Diamonds are an especially easy place for that last version to take over, because the industry is so widely misunderstood and so easy to frame as a moral question instead of a factual one. Defending lab-grown diamonds can feel like the correct position before anyone’s actually looked at the argument, simply because it reads as more ethical, more modern, less complicit in whatever the natural diamond industry gets accused of. And once a position feels virtuous, it stops needing to be checked. The certainty comes from the framing, not from the facts underneath it.

To be clear, none of Bethenny’s specific claims that I've seen were actually moral arguments. But she’s operating inside a field where that consensus already exists, where “lab-grown” reads as the default good guy before anyone’s said a word about carats or clarity. That consensus is exactly what hands someone with a strong opinion and total confidence (Bethenny included) the amplification to speak on things they’re not necessarily equipped to speak on. It also hands the natural diamond loyalists a comment section to do what comment sections do best: argue, moralize, dunk. Neither side ends up learning anything though. They’re just restaging the same fight the algorithm already knows how to serve.

That’s also where incentive gets weaponized instead of examined. An industry professional defending lab-grown diamonds gets dismissed because they’re selling something. Someone defending natural diamonds gets dismissed for exactly the same reason. Nobody’s incentive gets scrutinized consistently, just whichever one is inconvenient to the point being made. The agenda becomes the story before the substance does.

Bethenny is interesting in that context because she also curates and sells lab-grown diamond jewelry, through her own site and brand partnerships. That doesn’t automatically make her argument wrong, but it does make the certainty of it worth examining.

The bigger issue is that most people aren’t going to spend twenty hours researching diamond pricing, geology, manufacturing, supply chains and market history before deciding what they think. They shouldn’t have to. That’s what good education is supposed to do. Take the certainty out of the hands of whoever delivers it best, and put it back on the facts.

And right now, I’m not sure the industry has created enough of a trusted middle ground: people who can make diamonds engaging, explain what’s actually happening, and give consumers enough context to form an opinion without immediately asking them to buy something or choose a side.

The QVC of it all.

There’s a version of this piece where TikTok Shop diamond auctions are a moral collapse — luxury commerce eating itself, people getting finessed live on camera. I don’t think that’s what’s most revealing.

The real comparison is QVC. Diamonique built an empire on a charismatic host, a countdown clock, and a “you don’t want to miss this one” energy that turns jewelry into event television. TikTok livestreams are basically that with an algorithm instead of a channel guide.

Rolling Stone went looking for the people fueling the trend and found buyers treating these auctions almost like a hobby, including Ryan Roth, who won his first lab-grown diamond for $700, then bought another for $94 while scrolling in the back of an Uber. His justification was simple, “I have adult money and free will.” None of this is particularly new. It’s impulse shopping, the same species QVC has been monetizing since the ‘80s.

But watch enough of his content and you can see the whole arc happen inside a single video. In one clip, Roth walks through his TikTok Shop loose gem hauls and then, without much of a pause, pivots straight into commentary: lab-grown and natural diamonds are chemically identical, natural diamonds are about to lose real value now that lab-grown has gone mainstream. Somewhere in the middle of that, he mentions that his family were, in his words, real old-school New York jewelers, and that his grandfather was the honorary mayor of 47th Street. Then comes the line: “That’s why I’m qualified to speak on diamonds.” Buyer, narrator, and authority, inside about ninety seconds, with an unverifiable family title doing the work a credential usually would.

Interestingly, Ryan Roth and Bethenny Frankel have even crossed paths on TikTok over their shared interest in diamonds, creating a rather fascinating dynamic to watch as the subject moves further into mainstream internet culture.

Some of the claims being made around these diamonds aren’t just opinions about whether you should buy one. They’re claims about what diamonds are, what they’re worth, and what makes them valuable in the first place.

Where the rarity argument falls apart.

To be fair, this isn’t really a Bethenny or Ryan problem. Some version of “diamonds aren’t rare anymore, they’re basically worthless” shows up every time lab-grown pricing makes headlines. Roth makes his own version of it in that same clip, just a few sentences after explaining why he’s qualified to say it. Their dynamic is just catching my eye and getting me thinking about what it says about who we’re willing to trust when it comes to diamonds.

The underlying claim isn’t crazy, either. Wholesale costs for lab-grown stones have been falling sharply, and resale is genuinely bad too. People should also just buy whatever they want. No notes there.

Where it breaks is the jump from “lab-grown prices collapsed” to “diamonds have no value” to “just get a CZ.” Three different claims compressed into one.

And that’s exactly why this matters. Diamonds are complicated enough that most consumers can’t always tell when something’s being oversimplified.

When people say “diamonds don’t have value anymore,” they’re usually not talking about every diamond equally. They’re talking about the position natural diamonds have historically occupied (culturally, financially, emotionally) and using the falling price of lab-grown diamonds as evidence that the entire category has somehow lost its value.

Rarity does drive value, but it’s never been the only input. Price, sentimental value, material value and investment potential are different things, and the diamond market is subject to many of the same forces as any other market: supply, demand, production costs, positioning and consumer expectations. Two stones with identical 4Cs can still command different prices when certification, provenance, brand, craftsmanship, seller and venue all enter the equation.

A diamond can be a bad investment and still be valuable to the person wearing it. A natural diamond can be rare without being a good financial investment. A lab-grown diamond can be chemically identical to a natural diamond and still behave completely differently in the marketplace.

And here’s what sits at the center of the whole moment for me: lab-grown diamonds getting cheap and abundant doesn’t make natural diamonds any less rare. Natural diamonds still form under conditions that take place over geological time, deep in the earth. That part of the equation hasn’t budged because a factory somewhere figured out how to grow a matching stone in a few weeks.

What changed is the economics of diamond as a manufactured product, which is a totally different story. Production has scaled dramatically over the last decade, and costs have fallen the way costs fall for anything you can produce at scale. Abundance, production costs, consumer demand, positioning, distribution and expectations all affect what a product can command. Scarcity is just one variable.

And the CZ line genuinely bugs me, because it flattens two different materials into one sentence. Cubic zirconia is a simulant, meaning it’s a different substance that just looks similar to a diamond. A lab-grown diamond is synthetic, meaning it’s chemically and physically an actual diamond, grown instead of mined.

This is also where I understand some of the industry’s obsession with terminology, even when I don’t always agree with how it handles it. Consumers routinely use “fake,” “lab-grown,” and “CZ” as if they’re interchangeable. They’re not. If the goal is consumer confidence, the answer can’t just be policing vocabulary. It has to be education, and that’s an area where the industry has plenty of room to do better.

So who actually gets to talk about diamonds?

This is where I keep circling back to: what actually makes someone qualified to talk about diamonds?

I don’t think the answer is simply a credential, a job title, a family connection, or a large following. And I certainly don’t think having an opinion should disqualify anyone from participating in the conversation. Diamonds get more riveting when more people care about them.

What I do think matters is the difference between knowing something and sounding like you know something. Between having a perspective and presenting it as fact. Between educating someone and giving them a conclusion.

I’ve spent enough years behind the jewelry counter to know that expertise isn’t memorizing the 4Cs. It’s knowing what you don’t know, what questions to ask, and how much context someone needs before you give them an answer.

That’s what I think gets lost online. We have more information, more opinions and more people talking about diamonds than ever before, but somehow less clarity around who we should actually be listening to.

A diamond doesn’t need fewer opinions. We just need to get better at knowing which ones are worth listening to.

Not every engagement ring appointment felt like work.

One couple in particular comes to mind. Neither was dragging the other there. Neither was performing enthusiasm they didn’t have. They genuinely wanted to shop together.

He paid attention to what styles she gravitated toward. She was thoughtful enough to make it clear she wasn’t trying to take advantage of his budget. They asked questions, shared stories, laughed at each other’s jokes, and somewhere in the middle of it, the conversation drifted.

I stumbled into fine jewelry consulting expecting to learn about diamonds. Instead, I found myself studying the people buying them.

An engagement ring appointment compresses an incredible amount of a relationship into a short conversation. Love, money, family expectations, insecurity, generosity, compromise, status, fear, and excitement collide all at once. As a Sociology major, I couldn’t have imagined a better place to my degree to use.

Every couple became a case study where I learned how much thought, effort, and emotion people pour into preparing for marriage. The traditions, the ceremony, and the financial and emotional investment that come with choosing your "forever person." I also watched engagements outlast the marriages they were meant to begin.

The clients shopping for a second and third ring taught me the harsh realities of marriage, which, in turn, made me most hesitant. There’s nothing wrong with trying again, but many of them told me that they had been absolutely certain the first time. That the person they were marrying was the one until life proved otherwise.

That kind of certainty followed by revision is not a realization you can unknow.

I also assisted couples who made me wonder why they were there at all. They never seemed unhappy, but nothing between them felt chosen. The conversations felt rehearsed. The energy was flat in a way that had nothing to do with nerves. It seemed less like a decision and more like two people arriving at the next stop on a route neither of them questioned.

I used to think long relationships automatically meant certainty. Working in jewelry taught me they were often much more complicated. Sometimes, people stay together because they still choose each other. Sometimes they stay together because neither knows what else to do.

But then there were couples like the one in the opening scene.

They weren’t a blueprint for what my relationship should look like. They were a reminder that commitment can feel intentional rather than inevitable.

Most of it came down to this: know what you want and why you want it.

Looking back, that was the thread connecting nearly every couple I met, whether their marriage lasted or not. I’m more at peace with the uncertainty now than I used to be. I want to get married one day, to the right person, once. I’m willing to do it once. But I also know marriage is not the ceiling of a life well-lived.

My perspective on marriage changed long before I decided what I wanted on my ring finger. And when clients asked me what I wanted, I noticed the answer wasn’t really about taste. It was about everything I believed marriage represented.

I want a natural diamond. Preferably a setting that’s unusual, not what’s currently trending. My preference for natural diamonds may be a product of the very mythology I’ve spent Part 1 and Part 2 examining. Social signaling, the desire to be chosen publicly, and the standards inherited from generations before me. I’ve written about all of it as though I’m standing outside of it, but I’m not. My taste is shaped by the same culture I am questioning. And I still want a natural diamond.

Those things can exist at the same time.

Awareness doesn’t always erase desire. Sometimes it simply helps you understand where that desire came from.

What makes engagement rings feel different to me is the specific weight of the symbol. For a long time, couples who wanted an alternative chose something categorically different, like sapphires, rubies, or other gemstones. Diamond simulants, such as moissanite and cubic zirconia, never created the same tension because they were understood as different products altogether.

Lab-grown diamonds changed the conversation by making the alternative visually indistinguishable from the original. They ask us to believe the meaning stays intact even as the underlying assumptions shift.

I’ve watched the lab-grown debate get framed as a question of ethics, budget, or personal taste. And it is all of those things. However, beneath that is a much older question about sacrifice.

What are we willing to sacrifice for the things that matter to us?

Choosing a lab-grown diamond isn’t inherently less thoughtful. For some couples, putting that money toward a home, paying off debt, or building their future together may be the more intentional expression of commitment.

Not because spending more automatically creates love. Not because a natural diamond is proof of anything a lab-grown diamond isn’t.

But because sacrifice consistently has been one of the ways society recognizes significance. The cost becomes part of the sentiment it carries. I thought about this every time a couple chose a lab-grown stone so they could put more toward a down payment, or chose natural because the cost itself felt like the point. Neither one was less serious about what they were building.

Lab-grown diamonds didn’t introduce a new product. They introduced a new relationship with sacrifice. Calling that progress or loss depends on what you believe sacrifice is meant to represent in the first place.

For me, natural diamonds preserve an aspect of that symbolism I still find valuable.

I didn’t realize that the question my clients were asking me would take years to answer.

Maybe that’s because I no longer think it has a single right answer.

What I care about now is understanding the values behind my own desires before deciding whether they’re worth defending.

I don’t think luxury is about owning expensive things. I think it’s about choosing your symbols deliberately. Luxury, at its best, isn’t permission to consume more. It’s an invitation to become more conscious of what you allow to represent your life.

Placed inside an act of protest, though, the ring starts to say something bigger. It becomes evidence that love itself can be a form of resistance.

Rings, lockets and brooches have long been a way to carry hidden texts for affection, grief, or loyalty when saying it out loud wasn’t really an option. This ring belongs to that lineage, except it flips the script. Instead of hiding its message, it wears it in plain sight.

Reaching the top of one of New York’s tallest buildings took physical endurance, legal risk, and a willingness to accept real consequences. Isn’t that also what commitment requires?

Creative reinterpretation online is inevitable, but I wish we’d sat with the original sentiment a little longer. Not every cultural moment needs to become marketing. Some deserve to stay as conversations.

Angela and Ivan stood above the city under a banner calling for peace, asking us to think differently about commitment. The ring wasn’t just documenting a relationship. It became part of the protest’s language, proof that love is capable of more than we allow ourselves to imagine.

Maybe that’s the real achievement of the stunt. It reveals that peace doesn’t only come through grand political gestures. Sometimes it starts with two people choosing each other, believing that uniting is still powerful enough to be worth risking everything for.

Too plain, too gaudy, “wait, go back to that other one.” Some of what she thought she wanted looked different on her ring finger than it had on her Pinterest board. Some styles she hadn’t even considered looked better than she’d expected.

We eventually got to the lab-grown cases.

She browsed for a moment, mentally comparing the stone sizes. Then, almost exactly the way it always happened, she tilted her left hand toward the light and asked the question.

“Would anyone be able to tell?”

At first, I thought women were asking if the diamond looked real. The longer I spent behind the counter, the more I realized they were asking something much deeper, something that had little to do with my gemological training and everything to do with symbolism.

In Part One, I wrote about how the emergence of lab-grown diamonds changed men’s approach to purchasing engagement rings. Most of them wanted to compare its characteristics to the price. “So what’s really the difference?”, was another way of asking whether the premium for a natural diamond was worth paying. They were really asking about economic value.

Occasionally men asked the same question women did, but it was about whether anyone would notice he’d spent less. Even then, the question was really about cost, dressed up as concern about appearances.

Women usually asked about social meaning instead.

What makes lab-grown diamonds so complicated is that they’re not just another gemstone option. They’re visibly and chemically identical to a natural diamond, allowing them to carry the same social meaning while costing a fraction of the price.

Nobody actually believes the size of a stone is a perfect measure of love. However, symbols don’t get their power from logic. They get their power from collective belief. And lab-grown diamonds figured out how to borrow that belief without paying what it used to cost.

Lab-grown diamonds didn’t rid us of the social expectations around engagement rings. They simply made them cheaper to satisfy.

Which should have disrupted the status signal entirely.

Instead, it preserved it at a discount.

Women weren’t shopping for a financial asset the way men were. They were shopping for a social one. The feeling of being chosen, publicly, by someone willing to demonstrate it. It’s rarely just about the ring. It’s about the story the ring tells on her behalf, and how that story signals the right message once it leaves the showroom.

That last part matters more than people admit. A woman who gets engaged wears the evidence of it daily, in front of people who will judge it whether she invites them to or not. The immediate unspoken validation, “He must really love you.” Followed by the quick subconscious calculation of how much.

The size of the stone, the quality, the cut, all of it becomes shorthand for how much a person is valued, which then gets translated into status. That interpretation might be reductive. It might be exactly the kind of thing we should have evolved from by now. And yet it persists, because the people forming their judgements aren’t making a deliberate intention to be unkind. They’re just doing what people have always done with symbols, reading what it signifies.

Which is exactly why I see that question as a double-edged sword. She wasn’t really asking me. She was asking me as a proxy for every room she was about to walk into for the rest of her life if she chose a lab-grown diamond. She was trying to access the social status a larger diamond signals, while questioning if it would be received as genuine.

Ironically, that’s exactly why so many women choose lab-grown diamonds in the first place. They believe a larger stone elevates how they’ll be perceived, when in reality they’re still measuring themselves against someone else’s definition of status. The appearance changes, but the hierarchy they’re trying to climb remains exactly the same.

What I found most interesting wasn’t the choice itself, but the moment that choice shifted.

There’s a specific point in that conversation, and I watched it happen enough times to recognize it, where a woman stops shopping for herself and starts shopping for the room she’s in. Where the internal question “what do I actually want?” suddenly gets replaced with “what will this say about me?” Not out of dishonesty, but out of the very human instinct to want this romantic symbol of commitment to balance authenticity and aspiration.

The friend’s role in moments like that shows that “the room” wasn’t always some distant, hypothetical audience. Sometimes she was standing two feet away, watching the future fiancée try on a version of herself she hadn’t considered before. At times, the friend would openly say that a huge lab-grown diamond didn’t feel like her, based on everything she’d shared in the past. Other times, the response was quieter. A look only I seemed to catch where her eyebrows spelled, Really?. And sometimes the friend asked the question on her friend’s behalf, using the moment as a rehearsal for a decision she hadn’t yet had to make herself.

It’s not a weakness. It’s what happens when the social meaning of an object becomes so loaded that it starts to compete with your own relationship to it.

I thought about that question long after those women left the store, because it was one of the most common things I heard as a consultant. “Would anyone be able to tell?” is only worth asking if you’re planning to let people interpret your ring as something it isn’t. What bothered me wasn’t the lab-grown diamond. It was the impulse to pass it off as something other than what it is.

The reason people want a larger, more impressive lab-grown stone is still measured against natural diamond value. Lab-grown didn’t disrupt that standard. It found a way to approximate it for less, which is perfectly fine. However, choosing lab-grown and then hoping no one can tell isn’t opting out of the old system. It’s trying to hack it.

The question doesn’t always end when she leaves the store, either. Some women came back after a proposal for a resizing and asked me, half-joking, if I could tell. I technically can’t. But I’ve been trained to make an educated guess, and I think some part of them already suspected that.

I also noticed the same women who quietly hoped no one could tell were often the ones with a justification already prepared, as if the choice had nothing to do with how it would be perceived. Maybe for some of them it didn’t. But for a lot of them, the explanation arrived a little too rehearsed to be only about ethics, sustainability, and practicality.

Over time, I’ve realized that the question doesn’t go away after I answer it. It just goes quiet, then resurfaces in more casual ways. Sometimes it shows up in comment sections online, where women defend lab-grown diamonds that often sounds less like a settled conviction and more like an argument they’re still having with themselves. That’s not proof their preference was wrong. It’s proof the question is more deeply nuanced than any answer could solve.

Here’s what I noticed about the women who didn’t ask that question at all.

The ones who chose lab-grown confidently, on their own terms, didn’t need to. They were forthright about it from the start. They didn’t care to see natural diamonds at all. They’d already done their research and arrived knowing exactly what they wanted, which, again, was the difference that kept showing up across every version of this conversation.

They also didn’t push for the biggest stone the budget could technically reach. Several stayed at a size that suited her hand, personality, and lifestyle rather than maximizing for impact. They chose modestly, on purpose.

Compare that to the women who would trade in a natural diamond they already owned for a bigger lab-grown one. Economically, that trade makes no sense at all. You’d be giving up real, market value for the appearance of more. But it makes complete sense if what you’re actually optimizing for isn’t the diamond. It’s the size of the statement.

That’s the clearest indication I have that this was never really about the stone.

Knowing what you want is only half of it, though. The harder, unadvertised part is knowing why you want it.

Nobody in a jewelry store is going to ask her why. Consultants want a sale, not a self-aware customer. So if that work happens at all, it happens before an appointment is set. Not just researching what’s out there, but being honest with herself about why a certain decision feels necessary. If the desire is coming from her own taste, or from something she’s absorbed so completely she’s stopped noticing it isn’t entirely hers.

I don’t know what steps it takes to get there. I only know what it looks like from behind a glass showcase when someone already has.

Whether the choice is natural or lab-grown, it should be made for the right reasons. It should reflect what she genuinely values, not because it performs a version of the ideals she believes she’s supposed to embody. A lab-grown diamond chosen confidently is entirely different from one chosen because it can pass as something else. One is a decision. The other is a costume.

The ring shouldn’t need to deceive anyone to mean something. And she shouldn’t have to wonder if anyone can tell.

I spent years watching other people contemplate that question. It wasn’t until someone turned it back on me that I realized how much I’d been avoiding my own.

The man who stood across the showcase from me couldn’t say what diamond shape his girlfriend liked. He couldn’t tell me what jewelry she wore. He quickly realized that the natural diamond engagement ring we were considering cost more than he was expecting.

“Well, what’s this I heard about lab-grown diamonds? Can I see one?” I already saw where this was going, but I played along.

Suddenly his face lit up for the first time since he walked in. Better quality, bigger stone, less expensive.

Box it up.

“What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.”

Cue the cringe.

I’ve heard variations of that sentence during my years of selling engagement rings. It wasn’t always malicious. But it was consistent.

Most of the time, it appeared when a woman had no clearly stated preference and the decision was left entirely to him. Once lab-grown diamonds went mainstream, men suddenly had a new option: a stone that looked just as natural to the average eye while costing significantly less. For some, that simply meant more flexibility. For others, it seemed to create a temptation to make the decision on her behalf.

What bothered me wasn’t the choice itself. It was the assumption that a preference only mattered if it had been explicitly stated. If she hadn’t asked for a natural diamond, then a lab-grown one would suffice. And because a diamond is a diamond, she didn’t need to know the difference.

I always encouraged clients to discuss natural versus lab-grown diamonds before shopping, or at the very least disclose the choice afterward. Yet I still met women who came into the store after a proposal, asking me to confirm whether the diamond on their finger was actually what they’d been told it was.

Those situations undoubtedly existed before lab-grown diamonds. But as they grew in popularity, I noticed it happening more often.

It also brought attention to a larger shift taking place in the engagement ring industry. Not just in what people were buying, but their approach to the purchase and the language used to justify it. Lab-grown diamonds are labeled as the ethical, sustainable, conflict-free alternative. And that justification indirectly gave women a socially acceptable way to expect less, and gave men a socially acceptable way to spend less.

After enough time on the sales floor, the pattern got hard to ignore.

If a woman was adamant about a natural diamond, the conversation went differently. Her preferences were known. On top of that, I noticed that the man usually knew more about her and all the details that signal how closely someone has actually been paying attention.

But when a woman was described as easygoing, the outcome was often the same. She got a lab-grown diamond.

It wasn’t about the diamond itself. It was about how often the decision fell on the man’s interests rather than hers. The moment lab-grown diamonds entered the scene, a lot of men stopped shopping for the woman they were proposing to and started shopping for themselves.

Men with girlfriends who preferred natural diamonds would say things like, “She’d kill me if I didn’t get her a natural diamond.” There was an acknowledgment that her standards existed and mattered.

The language around the women who ended up with a lab-grown was more like, “She doesn’t care either way, and I’m not complaining.”

My point is that the clearer a woman’s desires were, the more likely they were to guide the purchase. The more vague or accommodating she was, the easier it became for someone else to decide for her.

Now, the idea that you have to tell a man what you want isn’t groundbreaking information. But watching this interaction play out over and over again in this context definitely reiterates how important it is to know and communicate your preferences.

In all fairness, the men’s involvement was more complicated than my observation highlights.

Most of them weren’t trying to get away with something. They were actually more nervous than I’d ever seen a grown man be. The engagement ring process genuinely intimidated them. They were afraid of choosing wrong, disappointing someone they loved, spending too much, spending too little.

The ones who seemed most at ease had one thing in common: they knew exactly what she wanted.

When a man could communicate his girlfriend’s preferences, he was more confident because he wasn’t negotiating against an invisible standard. And when he had a direction, he was even willing to spend more.

I remember conversations where a man found out that the lab-grown diamond his girlfriend specifically wanted cost far less than he’d expected, and instead of quietly keeping the difference, he started thinking of ways to use it. A bigger stone, an upgraded setting, a hidden halo, an engraving, anything.

“She’s worth it,” he’d say.

For those men, the goal was never to be cheap. It was to make her feel like he’d really thought about it.

That’s where the pattern started to break down.

The pattern I kept seeing, lab-grown allowing men to sacrifice less while still looking generous, was real. But it was most true for men whose girlfriends’ desires had become vague enough to be negotiated downward. The men who actually knew their partners often behaved differently.

Either way, there was something nearly every one of them wanted.

To feel like a hero.

Sometimes they said it outright: “If I get this ring, I’ll look like a superhero.”

I was guilty of using that line myself. At 23, standing behind a glass case, I had a strange kind of access to a grown man’s confidence about his own relationship. There’s an odd amount of power in that position. Someone’s entire sense of themselves as a partner is briefly sitting in my hands, and my manager just wants me to close the deal.

The crazy part about it was that line always worked. I simply mirrored the version of himself he was already hoping to see, and he bought the ring. Every time.

I told myself in those moments that there was a difference between manipulation and confirmation. I’m still not entirely sure how well that holds up.

What lab-grown diamonds did was make that superhero moment more accessible. A man could walk in nervous, walk out with a bigger stone than he expected at a price he could actually manage, and feel like he had delivered.

The feeling of generosity, at a discount.

Whether that counts as progress is something I’m still thinking about.
