I wasn’t looking for jewelry. That’s the annoying thing about the best finds, because they never happen when you’re actually looking.

It was around 11pm in Naousa, Paros, and the streets were flooded with people spilling out of tavernas, drifting toward bars, ducking into souvenir shops for the one last thing they forgot to buy earlier. I was just wandering the way you do on a Greek island vacation, half-lost on purpose, weaving through narrow whitewashed corridors where every few steps you get blinded with a flash of bright white light spilling out from a storefront window. One of those flashes stopped me mid-step, and it was Haniotis Hellas Fine Jewelry.

The store itself was lit almost clinically bright white, which must have been on purpose. Against all that white, the gold just glowed. Every case radiated warmth from within. There were only two associates working, and for the full twenty minutes I was there, I was the only customer. No waiting, no competing for attention, just me, the gold, and someone genuinely excited to tell me the stories behind it.

The first thing that threw me off, in the best way, was that this luxury fine jewelry store location stays open until 1am. In the States, fine jewelry stores close at 7pm and the lights are basically off by the time you'd think about walking in. In Paros, apparently, late evening is prime shopping hour, right alongside dinner and drinks. The second thing I noticed: almost everything was yellow gold. Sterling silver exists in the case, sure, but it’s clearly not the main character. And the third thing, there is no such thing as “dainty” here. Every chain has real weight to it, you feel it the second it’s around your neck. It’s not delicate jewelry. It’s statement jewelry that happens to also be wearable every day.

The consultant walked me through the Mythical Treasures collection. This is exactly the kind of find I go looking for when I travel. I wasn't expecting a late-night wander to turn into this. It didn’t feel like a tourist trinket case. It felt like walking through a small museum of Greek culture where every charm was a myth, and every myth was a value someone still wants to carry with them.

A Closer Look at the Collection

Haniotis Hellas’ Mythical Treasures collection is handcrafted in Athens in 18k gold, silver, and an array of natural stones, and every single charm is a tiny piece of Greek mythology you can wear. Pegasus, the Nemean Lion, the bee (Melissae), the deer of Artemis, the Ouroboros, the all-seeing evil eye. You pick your motifs, build your own combination, and walk out wearing your own personal mythology. They call the pre-assembled versions “Ready Set” necklaces, which is a very cute way of saying “we’ve already done the hard part for you.”

Between the excitement surrounding Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey and a renewed fascination with Greek mythology, I don't think I could have picked a better time to discover a jewelry collection inspired by ancient legends. Here I was, standing in a shop in the actual Cyclades, holding a literal Pegasus gold medallion in my hand while the movie’s marketing was still trending online. It felt less like a coincidence and more like a realization that while Greek mythology may be having a cultural moment elsewhere, in Greece, it has never really gone out of style.

The First Piece: Deer, Emeralds, and a Dress To Match

The consultant put me in the Rolo Chain with Round Clasp layered with the Diamond Deer Reversible Charm hanging from an Emeralds Charm Extender (18k gold bezel-set natural emeralds, 0.47ct total weight). In Greek mythology, the deer belongs to Artemis, goddess of the hunt and the wild, so the symbolism gives “elegant, but don’t test me.” Grace and wildness in one animal, which felt very on-brand for me.

This is also where I noticed something I ended up loving about the whole collection. The pendants are reversible, with a second symbol engraved on the back that carries its own meaning. It sounds like a small detail until you actually wear one. Pendants never sit still. They twist, they flip, they turn as you move. Normally, that means you’re constantly “fixing” it back to face front. With these, it doesn’t matter which side lands facing out. It’s designed to look intentional either way, so you’re never adjusting it self-consciously in a mirror. Practical and poetic, since it means you’re technically wearing two myths at once, whether you can see them both or not.

This was the piece I actually fell for. It matched my dress that night in a way that felt like fate more than styling, and I genuinely didn’t want to take it off.

The Second Piece: An Eye, a Pegasus, and Infinity, All on One Chain

Next came the Mini Paperclip Chain with Round Clasp, stacked with three charms: the Diamond Sapphire Eye Charm, the Diamond Pegasus Charm, and the Diamond Mini Ouroboros Charm.

The eye charm is rooted in the ancient belief that a watchful gaze wards off envy and bad energy. Think of it as a built-in bodyguard you wear around your neck. The Pegasus is the messenger of the gods, a symbol of freedom and reaching for things that feel a little out of reach. And the Ouroboros (the serpent eating its own tail), represents infinity, transformation, the whole life-death-rebirth cycle. Three tiny myths, one chain.

And like the deer charm, these aren’t one-sided either. Flip the Pegasus around and you get the Great Square of Pegasus itself (sun, sea, and all) instead of just the horse. It’s the same idea I loved earlier: no “wrong” side to end up facing out, just a second story waiting on the back for whenever the chain happens to turn.

The Piece the Consultant Called the Brand’s Signature

Before I left, the consultant pulled out the one piece he said best captures what Haniotis is really about. It was a necklace featuring the Diamond Mini Ouroboros Charm, the Peacock Charm, and the Diamond Pear-Shaped Aquamarine Charm.

The Mini Ouroboros, Peacock, and Diamond Pear-Shaped Aquamarine charms.

Layered together, the symbolism practically writes itself. The Ouroboros is the endless cycle of life, death, rebirth, transformation with no real ending. The Peacock is sacred to Hera, its “eyes” borrowed from the loyal, ever-watchful Argus, standing for vision and protection. And the Aquamarine is the ancient sailor’s stone, worn to calm the seas and protect anyone brave enough to leave home for the water. Put those three together and you basically get the entire arc of The Odyssey in one necklace. I don’t think that was intentional on the brand’s part, but it’s hard to unsee once you notice it.

Which, feels like the whole point of Haniotis Hellas. This isn't just a jewelry line borrowing decorative symbols, it's a brand built entirely around the idea that every piece you put on should mean something specific to you. They're inviting you to build your own mythology out of theirs.

That night I left empty-handed, but full of ideas. Sometimes the best souvenir isn’t an item, it’s the inspiration you bring home with you. I left with a new appreciation for how much heavier, literally and figuratively, Greek gold jewelry is than anything I’m used to back home, and a small mental list of everything I’m going back for next time.
